The project
Ivory Coast already has a shortage of nearly one million housing units. Some 220,000 people move to Abidjan every year. This unprecedented urban growth is happening in several African countries. We designed Lives2 with the Côte d’Ivoire Ministry of Urban Affairs, the French Directorate-General of the Treasury and many French and African public and private partners: a housing unit with an extra room for a commercial or social activity that benefits the local community. -
We wanted it to be responsible and sustainable by choosing local, durable and affordable building materials and aiming for energy self-sufficiency with natural ventilation, solar panels and water recovery solutions.
We wanted it to be economically virtuous by facilitating access to property ownership with an affordable sales price (< €20,000) and letting owners earn income. The “extra room” allows everybody to create a business with the potential of creating jobs in the neighbourhood.
We wanted it to be inclusive and social by increasing the supply of decent housing, supporting local social programmes such as vocational training courses taught by the Compagnons du Devoir and encouraging groups and organisations that promote women’s self-empowerment to move there.
