New energies at the service of a new urban center.
“We’ve created more than a shopping centre. It’s a place where people really meet and makes Milan’s first ‘smart urban district’ a lively, bustling venue!”

The project
At the centre of Milan’s first smart urban district, northwest of the city, Merlata Bloom Milano aims to be the crossroads of a booming area.
We designed a site open to the outside that strengthens the links of a unique quarter: it includes a hospital, a research and green innovation centre, a university campus and a residential neighbourhood. Merlata Bloom Milano is a place for people to meet, enlivened by and for those who live or work there. -
We wanted it to be responsible and sustainable by using eco-responsible building materials, favouring natural light, creating green spaces (300,000 m2) and an urban farm (20,000 m2) and connecting it to public transport.
We wanted it to be high-tech and participatory, asking the residents to choose the commercial and cultural amenities and augmenting each physical space with digital services.
We wanted it to be vibrant and lively, revolutionising and transforming traditional retail. We created a place where everybody—families, residents, students and workers—can enjoy themselves without feeling like they’re in a shopping centre.
