The project
A 20th-century industrial centre, Resita starting losing some of its economic activity and population in 1989, leaving 100 hectares of brownfields and a divided, distressed community. With local residents and elected officials, we aimed to revive the site, making it an attractive destination for both citizens and tourists by capitalising on its suburban nature and industrial heritage. -
We wanted it to be ecologically viable by using eco-responsible building materials, creating green spaces and conserving and protecting natural resources. We opted for green energy sources and conduct comparative studies to shrink the carbon footprint of all our choices (supply, logistics, food, waste, etc.)
We wanted it to be useful and participatory by listening to citizens, keeping in touch with local events and initiatives and, especially, actively participating with the city’s elected officials in the “Resita 2030” project by building 582 housing units, a 35,000m2 shopping and entertainment centre and 4,000m2 of office space.
We wanted it to be attractive and lively by developing sport and cultural amenities for the inhabitants of the city and neighbouring countries (Hungary and Serbia), capitalising on a range of outdoor activities, creating a 40,000m2 water park and building 23,200m2 of hotel space.

How can a shopping centre help to improve a sense of local community?
